Appendicitis

Acute appendicitis

The appendix, a small pouch attached to the gut, becomes inflamed. Pain often starts near the belly button and moves to the lower-right side.

Obstruction and inflammation of the vermiform appendix. Classic progression: peri-umbilical pain migrating to McBurney's point, anorexia, low-grade fever. Risk of perforation and peritonitis.

Red flags — seek urgent help
  • Generalised peritonism (perforation)
  • High fever
  • Rapid clinical deterioration
