GERD (Acid Reflux)

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease

Stomach acid flows back up into the food pipe, causing heartburn and a sour taste. Often worse after large meals or when lying down.

Retrograde flow of gastric contents through an incompetent lower oesophageal sphincter, causing mucosal injury. Hallmarks: heartburn, regurgitation. Risks include oesophagitis, stricture, and Barrett's oesophagus.
