Peptic Ulcer

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD)

A sore in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine, often causing a gnawing or burning pain in the upper tummy.

Mucosal break >5 mm in the stomach or duodenum. Leading causes: H. pylori infection and NSAID use. Complications: bleeding, perforation, gastric outlet obstruction.

Red flags — seek urgent help
  • Haematemesis / melaena
  • Sudden severe abdominal pain (perforation)
  • Persistent vomiting
